MILL A SCHOOL OPENING WITH MODIFIED SCHEDULE
August 7, 2020
While many schools cannot safely meet the guidelines established by OSPI and the Department of Health (DOH) for returning to in-person schooling for 2020-2021,
Mill A School and Pacific Crest Innovation Academy will be able open on time (8/26) with in-person, on-campus instruction, with some modifications to the schedules to ensure that all groups meet “reduced numbers” recommended by Skamania County health officials.
In a letter released by Skamania County Deputy Health Officer, most schools are recommended to start with distance learning, but “some school districts (MASD) with smaller numbers of students … may be able to offer in person instruction or a hybrid model.”
In order to meet the “smaller numbers of students” (less than 10 per cohort), Mill A School will be starting the school year with an A/B AM/PM model which allows all MAS students to receive in-person instruction for 3.5 hours Monday – Thursday. All MAS students will follow a distance learning plan every Friday for instruction, continued practice of the prior week’s lessons, and small group or individual assistance from MAS teachers via Zoom and other online learning tools.
AM Group (8:00 – 11:35) will include: Kindergarten and grades 4, 5, 6, & 7
PM Group (12:00 – 3:35) will include grades: 1, 2, 3, & 8
*The draft bus schedule will be posted as soon as possible
The full schedule is available on the MAS website (under Quick Links).
Each group will be able to have one meal (breakfast or lunch) at school, and the other will be provided for students to take home. Because MAS is approved for Community Elligibility school service funding, all MAS students may receive school meals free of charge for the 2020-2021 school year.
MASD administration and staff recognize that this schedule may come with complications for some families, but we are committed to our mission of providing the best instructional opportunity possible for MAS students. Unfortunately, because of the additional health-related safety precautions we cannot have all students at school all the time every day, but we believe this is the best and most consistent model for Mill A School students, families, and teachers.
In order to keep all students and staff as safe as possible as they return to school, we are committed to following the safety measures:
All staff, faculty and students will be required to wear masks or face shields;
All staff and students will submit (via app) a health symptom survey prior to arrival at school;
We will be taking temperatures every morning prior to students and staff entering the school building;
Hand washing and/or sanitizing stations will be readily available for use;
Classrooms will be configured to ensure students maintain the proper social distancing requirements.
By everyone working together, we will be able to continue meeting in person. We ask you to also do your part by keeping your students home if they show any symptoms of illness. However, if the need arises for us to put our school in quarantine, we have also created a robust online distance learning model if we need to quickly pivot and learn from home for a few weeks.
We are excited to see everyone’s smiling (but masked) faces August 26th! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Superintendent Bob Rogers (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Kaylene Herman, Dean of Students/Academic Advisor (email@example.com) for enrollment or scheduling assistance.
